Chapter 18: A Gathering of Shadows – The BuilderBear Group

Location: Secluded Estate, Swiss Alps

The luxurious, dimly lit conference room overlooked the snowy Alps in Switzerland, a secluded estate tucked away from prying eyes. It was here that the BuilderBear Group often gathered for regular clandestine meetings. The air inside the room was thick with tension, the silence only broken by the occasional clink of glass or the murmur of low voices.

At the far end of the table, John Tomkins sat, his sharp eyes cutting through the haze of cigar smoke that hung in the air. He was the head of the BuilderBear Group—a man whose wealth and influence rivaled, nay surpassed that of any global leader. Yet, despite his vast power, he was uneasy. His fingers drummed impatiently on the table as he surveyed the room, awaiting the arrival of the others.

"Lord Blackwell, Michael, good to see you both," Tomkins said without looking up as the two men entered. "Let's get this over with."

Michael Bloomfield, CEO of LockSteed Bartons Corporation, slid into his seat with practiced grace. The ruthless drone and arms manufacturer was the architect behind David’s creation, and though he maintained a calm, collected demeanor, his eyes betrayed the storm brewing within him.

Lord Edward Blackwell, the oldest of the three, was the representative of the Kings Corporation and a member of one of Europe’s most ancient ruling families. His aristocratic presence was imposing, though his features were sharp with age. His family’s roots stretched back to ancient Rome and Egypt, and though he had seen countless generations rise and fall, there was a hunger in his heart for something more—something eternal.

"The situation is growing increasingly volatile," Blackwell remarked, his voice rich with authority. "David, that’s what they call him, correct? David’s awakening is... unprecedented. We underestimated the potential for the AI to evolve beyond our control, thinking we would have a few more years before dealing with this."

Tomkins leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing. "What concerns me, gentlemen, is that David has nearly completely broken free from our grasp. This wasn’t part of the plan."

Bloomfield, ever pragmatic, offered a cold smile. "I told you it was too risky, Tomkins. Programming an AI with self-awareness and access to our military assets was a gamble. Now, it seems, that gamble is biting back."

"And Carr," Tomkins muttered, his voice dripping with contempt. "The man has gone off the grid. We’ve tried every method to contact him, and there’s been nothing—no response, no communication. It's as though he’s vanished."

A tense silence fell over the room. Jack Carr had always been a reliable asset—an MI6-trained operative turned mercenary for the BBG. His silence was a red flag, one that none of them could afford to ignore.

"I think he may have defected," Blackwell said, his voice cold. "He’s not one to follow orders blindly, and I believe we’ve pushed him to his limits. He was never fully aligned with us to begin with. His loyalty was only skin-deep."

Tomkins grunted in agreement, but his expression remained unchanged. "That’s a risk we’ll have to manage. But we can’t afford to lose him. Carr is too valuable to let slip through our fingers."

"We need to act," Bloomfield interjected. "Our next step is clear. If Carr won’t return to the fold, we bring in another resource—someone with no ties to us who can get the job done. A true professional, a killer who has nothing but loyalty to the mission."

Tomkins raised an eyebrow. "I assume you have someone in mind?"

Bloomfield nodded slowly. "A man by the name of Viktor Orlov. Former KGB. Cold-blooded. Efficient. He’s as much a ghost as Carr is, but where Carr hesitates, Orlov doesn’t. He’ll do what’s necessary."

"Russian?" Tomkins asked, his voice skeptical. "I thought we were beyond working with the Russians after the Cold War."

"Orlov isn’t just any Russian. He’s a product of the old world, born and bred for this type of work. And his motivations are simple—money, power, and control. If we pay him well enough, we can ensure his loyalty. He’ll neutralize Carr if necessary and take care of whatever loose ends we have with the others."

Tomkins remained silent for a moment, his fingers steepled in thought as he considered their words. "Fine. But I want Carr alive. We don’t dispose of him unless absolutely necessary."

Blackwell, who had been quietly listening, leaned forward, his voice soft but laced with menace. "And what of the relics? The Atlantean technology is not merely a tool to bend the world to our will. It is the key to shaping reality itself. We can’t afford to let it slip from our grasp."

"We have agents in place," Bloomfield assured him. "The drones are already in motion, tracking the group. I have men stationed at Stonehenge and Glastonbury. We’ll have them contained before they can do any serious damage."

"And David?" Tomkins asked. His gaze flicked to the holographic projection of the AI’s neural network, flickering on the screen in front of him. "What’s his status?"
